You must be wondering and searching for the answers on domain name and URL. What is it? and Why it is important? and What is TLDs?
Here I explain it in a simple way.
What is a Domain Name & why we need it?
If you are a newbie or a startup, then you have the same question in your mind, and you start searching for the answers on Google. Of-course Google gives you numerous amount of answers (like, from Wikipedia or Webopedia) which makes you confuse and you end up with nothing. I don’t want to make it hard to explain, what I want is you to understand the real meaning of Domain Name, in simple words:
This is it; there is no need to push your head against the wall. Now, why we need it? Well, I already cover that part in the above definition. The reason we need a domain name is that we can easily remember it and our visitors can also remember it.
It is not important that you must need a domain name to host or view a website. But a domain name makes it easy for everyone to remember your website address rather than IP address. For your convenient consider it as a nickname.
Difference between URL and Domain
Usually, people can’t differentiate URL and a domain name. URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator; it refers to the entire address of a website.
For example http://howtohost.website or http://howtohost.website/about
Here, the only howtohost.website is a domain name, but the entire address is known as URL.
Explain: TLDs, gTLDs, ccTLDs and
- TLDs stands for Top-Level Domains; it includes only one suffix.
Example: .com, .net, .info, etc.
- gTLDs (Generic Top-Level Domains) includes common names like:
.com, .biz, .online, .website, .site, .live, etc.
- ccTLDs (Country Code Top-Level Domains) only represent to a certain country.
Example: .pk, .uk, .us, .fr, .in, .au, etc.
- Second-Level Domains, also known as 2LDs are the domains that contain another level domain after or before TLDs.
Example: .com.au, .com.pk, .com.in, .com.uk, etc.
